Tubercles are raised white pimple-like growths which appear on the head, pectoral fins and opercula of some fishes, particularly cyprinids such as Goldfish. These are a secondary sexual characteristic and are most commonly seen in sexually mature male fish. They often appear at the beginning of the breeding season and are often referred to as spawning tubercles for this reason.
