Sexing

Males are more brightly coloured with slightly more elongated and elaborate fins, especially the dorsal fin. Males are slimmer than females.

Tank compatibility

An active community fish that should be kept in shoals of 6 or more. Will happily co-exist with equally active robust fish, but do not keep with long-finned, slow-moving or shy fish as the Columbian Tetra is very likely to fin-nip.

Diet

Omnivorous, will take pellets and flake as well as live and frozen food.

Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics

This fish prefers a spacious tank with open swimming place and room to shoal. Some hiding places in plants would be appreciated.

Behaviour

A peaceful shoaling fish that may fin-nip longer-finned fish if not kept in a reasonable sized shoal.

Identification

An attractive little tetra, a high-backed tetra with Piranha-like visible teeth. It's body is pale in colour with vivid blue/green iridescence. The fins are red in colour, the caudal fin being the most vibrant.
