Also known as Thiamine or thiamin, is a colourless compound with chemical formula C12H17N4OS. It is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. Vitamin B1 decomposes if heated.

What it Does[edit]

Vitamin B1 plays an important role in helping the body convert carbohydrates and fat into energy. It is essential for normal growth and development and helps to maintain proper functioning of the heart and the nervous and digestive systems. B1 is water-soluble and cannot be stored in the body; however, once absorbed, the vitamin is concentrated in muscle tissue.

Symptoms of Deficiency[edit]

Animals can appear to be lethargic, anorexia, poor growth, nervous disorders, impaired carbohydrate metabolism, increased sensitivity to shock by physical blow to container or from light flashes. Fin congestion/haemorrhage, nervousness, fading of body colour.

Prevention[edit]

Feed your animal at least three different types of food. This will ensure it gets adequate supply of this vitamin.

  • Don't use old food. Vitamins decay very rapidly once exposed to the air, heat or being frozen. Try to feed food that is no more than 6 months old.
  • Ensure you are not feeding food with Thiaminase in it as this removes B1 from the animal.
