Origin
- South America: coastal streams of the Guiana Shield.
Sexing
- Females may appear plumper than males.
Tank compatibility
- An active fish that should be kept in shoals of 6 or more. Is fast swimming and can be nippy, so should only be kept with robust similar sized fish.
Diet
- Will accept most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as brine shrimp and bloodworm.
Feeding regime
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment Specifics
- Requires a spacious tank with plenty of open swimming space as well as some hiding places. Prefers a medium to strong current and can be sensitive to water quality issues. They do require a laterally spacious tank due to their high activity levels.
Behaviour
- A very active shoaling fish.
Identification
- An elongate fish with large eyes in comparison to the head. The body is iridescent silver while the fins have hints of orange with black. The caudal fin is forked.
