Origin
- An African Tetra found throughout the Mono River in Togo to Nipoué River in Liberia; lower Zambezi, Wami River in Tanzania to Pongolo River in South Africa; Lakes Malawi, Rukwa, Rufiji and Ruvuma; Congo basin; on the western coast in the Quanza and the Nyanga, Tanganyika tributaries, Lake Kariba, Cunene River.
Sexing
- The males are more vibrant in colour. Sexual dimorphism on anal fins of males.
Tank compatibility
- A large fish that does best in shoals. Keep with fish of similar size that are generally peaceful but fast-swimming.
Diet
- Will take most meaty foods. Will accept pellet and flake food but prefers live/frozen such as bloodworm and brine shrimp.
Feeding regime
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment specifics
- Requires a large and spacious tank with some hiding places and plenty of open swimming space.
Behaviour
- Generally peaceful active and fast-swimming fish.
Identification
- An elongate fish with a forked tail and large scales. Mostly iridescent silver in colour with a black spot on the caudal peduncle. Fins are translucent with red hues.
