Sexing

The female is more full and rounded in the belly than males. The male has a small hook on its anal fin. This is not always easy to see.


Tank compatibility

A peaceful shoaling community fish that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Keep with other peaceful community fish.


Diet

Will accept most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm.


Feeding regime

Feed once or twice a day.


Environment specifics

Prefers a densely planted tank with dark substrate and floating plants and some open swimming space.


Behaviour

An active peaceful shoaling fish.


Identification

An elongate slender Tetra which is pale in base colour with a vivid bright yellow lateral line from the gills to the caudal peduncle. At the caudal peduncle there is a large black dot. The caudal fin itself is sharply forked and and the fins are mainly translucent with a slight yellow tint.

Conservation Status

According to the IUCN Red List, the Costello Tetra is a species of least concern and has a stable population.
