Origin[edit]
- Mountain streams of Colombia.
Sexing[edit]
- Male has larger pelvic fins, broader/larger head and slimmer sides.
Breeding[edit]
- Successful breeding is rarely reported. Most spawning has been unintentional.
Tank compatibility[edit]
- Peaceful, but can be territorial towards other plecos. Small fish and fry can be viewed as dinner, keep with mid-swimming fast fish such as larger Tetras.
Diet[edit]
- Omnivore, they eat algae but will readily accept sinking pellets, vegetables and live/frozen food.
Feeding regime[edit]
- See also: General Feeding Regime for common fish
- Feed once or twice a day.
Environment specifics[edit]
- Requires highly oxygenated water. Likes a fine sand substrate with smooth large rocks, some hiding places are beneficial also.
Behaviour[edit]
- A generally peaceful pleco towards tank mates, may be territorial towards other Plecos however.
Identification[edit]
- Identifying the different types of Chaetostoma takes some patience, the C.milesi can vary in colour from pale dusky yellow to deep olive green, they have bold darker coloured spots covering the body and turning into bars in the caudal fin. The underside is pale and they are characterised by the fleshy "lip" on the front of their nose.
