What is it?[edit]
Fish waste is the organic stuff that comes out of your freshwater or marine fish.
Freshwater fish[edit]
- Urea (NH2)2CO - also known as carbamide is the primary nitrogen waste product given off by fish - See Urea - Wikipedia
- Uric acid C5H4N4O3 - a organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen - See Uric acid - Wikipedia
- Creatinine C4H7N3O - a waste product of Phosphocreatine in muscle - See Creatinine - Wikipedia
The nitrogen excreted breaks down into ammonia and ammonium and if not removed will soon cause the ill health and eventually death of the fish. This is prevented by the use of nitrifying bacteria in a filter which eats the nitrogen.
