Tank compatibility[edit]

When adult, this crab is capable of catching and eating small fish and other invertebrates.

Diet[edit]

Unusually among temperate crabs, P. gibbesi is strictly herbivorous. This crab will graze on algae and detritus. If there is not enough food to scavenge it must be supplemented with dried seaweed.

Feeding regime[edit]

These crabs are scavengers, but will compete with other fish for food.

Environment Specifics[edit]

It prefers a strong current and will require a large aquarium with large amounts of rock work where it can hide and scavenge for detritus. It will also eat algae. When large, it can become aggressive and catch and eat small invertebrates and fish.

Behaviour[edit]

Generally get along well with other tank inhabitants and other Sally Lightfoot crabs. Being very active creatures, they tend to walk over corals and disturb them at times, but this does not cause any damage. They will also compete aggressively with other animals for food.

Identification[edit]

The Sally Lightfoot crab is easily recognized by it's green-brown carapace and yellow markings and bands around the joints of its legs. It has two front antennae which are constantly moving.
